Heat Treatment Guide & Properties
T15 high speed steel is typically hardened and tempered to achieve maximum wear resistance and hot hardness. Multiple tempering cycles are recommended to stabilize the microstructure and achieve optimal cutting tool performance.
Soft Annealing
Slow furnace cooling to achieve machinable structure.
Hardening
Oil, air, or salt bath quenching depending on section size.
Tempering
Usually triple tempering to achieve 65-67 HRC hardness.

■ Chemical Composition
The excellent cutting performance of T15 high speed steel comes from its high carbon and alloying elements including tungsten, vanadium, chromium, and cobalt. Tungsten improves hot hardness and red hardness, vanadium forms extremely hard carbides that increase wear resistance, chromium improves hardenability, and cobalt enhances high temperature strength. This combination makes T15 one of the most wear-resistant high speed steels used in demanding machining operations.
■ Mechanical Properties
T15 high speed steel exhibits extremely high hardness, outstanding wear resistance, and excellent hot hardness even at elevated cutting temperatures. The alloy maintains strength and cutting efficiency during high-speed machining and heavy-duty operations. Due to its high carbide content, it offers exceptional resistance to abrasion and deformation, making it ideal for precision cutting tools and industrial tooling applications.
