Heat Treatment Guide & Properties

Heat treatment is critical for achieving the full performance of M2 steel. Proper austenitizing followed by air or vacuum quenching and multiple tempering cycles develops high hardness, excellent wear resistance, strong compressive strength, and dimensional stability. M2 responds well to vacuum heat treatment and controlled atmosphere processing, making it suitable for precision tooling applications.

🔥

Annealing

850°C – 900°C

Slow furnace cooling to achieve maximum softness (220-260 HB) for machining.

🔥

Hardening

1180°C – 1230°C

Austenitize and air cool or vacuum quench depending on section size. Controlled atmosphere recommended to minimize decarburization.

🔥

Tempering

540°C – 560°C

Double or triple tempering cycles recommended to achieve secondary hardening, optimum hardness, and dimensional stability.

■ Chemical Composition

Element% Composition
Carbon0.78-0.88%
Chromium3.75-4.50%
Molybdenum4.50-5.50%
Tungsten5.50-6.75%
Vanadium1.75-2.20%
Silicon0.20-0.45%
Manganese0.15-0.40%
Phosphorus0.030% max
Sulfur0.030% max

M2 derives its performance from a carefully balanced alloy composition. High levels of molybdenum and tungsten contribute to excellent hot hardness and wear resistance, while vanadium enhances abrasion resistance through the formation of hard carbides. Chromium primarily improves hardenability and contributes to carbide formation rather than corrosion resistance. This alloy design allows M2 to maintain cutting efficiency even at high operating temperatures.

■ Mechanical Properties

PropertyValue
Hardness Annealed220-260 HB
Hardness Hardened62-66 HRC
Compressive StrengthGreater than 3000 MPa (after heat treatment)
Wear ResistanceExcellent
Hot HardnessMaintains hardness up to approximately 500-600°C

M2 high speed steel achieves very high hardness after proper hardening and multiple tempering cycles while maintaining good toughness for a tool steel grade. Typical hardened hardness ranges from 62 to 66 HRC. The steel exhibits excellent compressive strength and strong resistance to softening at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for high-speed and continuous cutting operations with extended tool life.
